London and Kent most likely places for dogs to be stolen

London and Kent have been revealed as the two most likely places in the UK for dogs to be stolen.

Figures show a year-on-year increase of 15 per cent for dog thefts

More than 165 pets were taken in London last year. Another 128 were taken from Kent.

Advice service 'DogLost' say thieves are particularly targeting gun dogs - such as retrievers or spaniels - with thefts rising since 2009.

The organisation has seen a year-on-year increase of 15 per cent with half of thefts relating to gun dogs.

Dogs are targeted by thieves because they can easily make money selling them on, often for breeding or, most distressingly, for fighting.

Gun dog owners should always be aware of where their animal is while they are on a shoot and make sure it is never out of the sight of guns, beaters or pickers-up.
