Vauxhall fire causes rail chaos

A fire on the tracks at Vauxhall train station this morning is causing travel chaos. Many services to and from London Waterloo are cancelled with delays of around an hour, with disruption expected until further notice.

South West Trains says all routes will have delays of up to 60 minutes and there are cancellations and changes to services through Windsor & Eton Riverside, Hounslow, Twickenham, Kingston, Richmond, Kingston, Shepperton and Ascot.

London Fire Brigade were called just before 3am to a fire by platforms 3 and 4. Five of the main eight lines at the station are now out of use while firefighters continue to work at the scene.

Once the power was isolated firefighters quickly got to work to tackle the fire.

We're currently assessing how much electrical cabling has been affected and damping down pockets of fire.

The fire will impact on travel this morning and we'd ask people to check before they travel.

Mick Cash, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, said:

We have had reports from our members on the ground of dangerous overcrowding on trains and at stations.

Our members are engaged in a major emergency evacuation operation to protect passengers and staff.

A South West Trains spokesman said:

As a result of a fire underneath a platform at Vauxhall station, services to and from London Waterloo are severely disrupted, with significantly fewer trains running than normal.

Passengers are strongly advised to check before travelling. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to passengers this morning.
