The former London mayor is expected to be the front runner to replace Mr Cameron as Conservative leader.

I think the country requires fresh leadership. In my view we should aim to have a new Prime Minister in place by the start of the Conservative Party conference in October.

Mr Johnson's decision in February to back the Leave campaign was a huge blow to the Prime Minister.

Mr Johnson's father Stanley said the referendum result meant his son was entitled to take part in a Tory leadership contest.

I would say he has won the right to have his name entered into the list of the Conservative party as they prepare their shortlist.
