New artwork is being unveiled at Piccadilly Circus tube station, dedicated to a man who commissioned some of the most recognisable icons of the Underground. Frank Pick was the first Chief Executive of London Transport, and made significant contributions to the look of London.
Frank Pick was given responsibility for London Underground's publicity in 1908 and recognised the potential of the powerful medium of graphic posters. Pick was aware that almost every attraction in London was within reach of the Underground, and could be marketed with eye-catching posters. He had a passionate commitment to good design and commissioned established artists like John Hassall to create the colourful advertisements.
New permanent artwork by BAFTA winning artists Langland & Bell is being commissioned as a legacy to Pick's work.
