Sadiq Khan congratulates George Osborne on new job

Sadiq Khan has congratulated George Osborne in his new role as editor of the London Evening Standard. The Mayor of London said that it would be “churlish” to not congratulate the former chancellor. But, Mr Khan did question how effective one can be if they hold multiple roles.

When I was successful in being elected Mayor of London, I gave up being the MP for Tooting – a job I loved. I think doing one job well is really important. I’m not sure I could do two – let alone six.

– Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

Mr Osborne is facing growing pressure to stand down as an MP following the announcement. He intends to carry on representing his Cheshire constituency of Tatton in Parliament.

Labour are now calling for an inquiry into whether he broke rules for former ministers by failing to get permission from the watchdog which vets new jobs taken by senior public figures.
