Grenfell death toll may be distorted by fraudsters claiming money for fake victims

The Grenfell Tower death toll may have been distorted by fraudsters claiming money for fake victims, it was claimed today.

Scotland Yard said it was investigating eight cases of fraud involving people allegedly claiming payments in the wake of the disaster.

Detectives believe the final death toll may be below the current figure of 80. Pathologists have formally identified 60 victims.

We are aware that there are eight fraudulent claims - varying claims. At this moment in time there are two people charged with fraud. It's something we have spoken to the family and survivors and they want us to prosecute.

– Det Supt Fiona McCormack, Met Police

Police are also investigating four reports of thefts from flats on lower floors. The tower has been under 24-hour security since the fire.
