The four female collie cross puppies, aged about three months old were left to fend for themselves in a muddy wet ditch in bitter winter storms last week.

One of the pups died before they were discovered by a dog walker, who rushed two of the pups to a vet. Later that evening another puppy was found abandoned in the same area.

Vets think the dogs are not from the same litter and the RSPCA is hunting the person who left the pups to die.

Inspector Helen Wheeler, who is leading the investigation, is looking for anyone who may have seen anything unusual around Fairlands Common, Guildford, on Thursday morning January 18 at around 11am and again in the evening.

This is a horrible abandonment of these vulnerable puppies and it is very concerning that there were two incidents in the same day.

The temperatures that morning were extremely cold with the storms passing through the night before and sadly one of the puppies had already died and was found lying in the ditch, wet and freezing cold.

All the pups were covered in fleas, they were dirty and smelled very strongly of faeces.
