A group of students found a distressed squirrel stuck in a toilet at their shared house in Southwark, south London.

In one of their more unusual rescues the RSPCA was called to the property to release him back into the wild.

The rodent gripped onto a mop handle and was lifted out before being cleaned.

I think he must have come into this house through the roof and slipped into the toilet.

It was certainly one of the most unusual rescues I’ve ever carried out - I did rescue a bat stuck in the plughole of a sink last year but I think this one takes the crown!

Some of the most bizarre rescues RSPCA staff have faced include:

  • A gull fell into a vat of cold Tandoori curry - turning him bright orange
  • A ewe was left feeling sheepish after getting a traffic cone stuck on her head which had to be removed by an inspector and set free
  • Cagney the Lhasa Apso had to be rescued after getting stuck in an electric reclining chair at a house
  • An animal collection officer arrived at a house to find a corn snake stuck in the head of the vacuum cleaner
