The Highways Agency say that the M40 has reopened northbound between J1a (M25) and J2 after a serious crash earlier.
They say delays will take a while to clear.
Twitter users have reported seeing two air ambulances landing at the scene of the accident on the M40 in Buckinghamshire.
Others say that they have been sitting in stationary traffic for between 90 minutes and two hours.
Five men and two women have been injured in an accident on the M40, involving five cars.
Fire-fighters were called to the scene at around 8:30 this morning and had to cut three men from their vehicles.
The Highways Agency says that the M40 is closed northbound, between junctions 1A and 2. It is not expected to re-open until 12:30pm.
The London Air Ambulance has been scrambled, after an accident on the M40 between Beaconsfield and the junction with the M25.
A stretch of the road has been closed.
