A planned strike by Home Office staff including immigration officers in a row over jobs and pay has been called off after progress in peace talks

A spokeswoman for airports operator BAA said:

We welcome the decision by the PCS to call off tomorrow's strike.So far passengers arriving for the Olympics have had a smooth journey through Heathrow and it is great news that those arriving tomorrow can also expect a warm welcome to London and the Games.

PCS defends members

Mark Serwotka from the PCS has criticised the reaction to staff over the proposed industrial action

To have civil servants have their patriotism questioned by failed politicians like Jeremy Hunt is unacceptable. I understand the reaction the Government was able to whip up.

But we are happy to say this action has been called off.
