Chelsea must learn from first match

In a pre-match briefing on Chelsea's website, former Blues winger Clive Walker said that lessons had to be learned from the first match, when Chelsea drew against Brentford at Griffin Park:

"The fact that it was a 2-2 draw against a League One side is all the proof you need that mistakes were made.

"Brentford were a matter of minutes from turfing the holders out of the FA Cup and I am sure their manager will be reminding them how close they were ahead of this replay.

"It was not a great pitch at Griffin Park because of the heavy rain and snow and they adapted better than we did."

"When you're playing a lower league side you know you have the better quality and they are more likely to make mistakes. Errors hurt you most at the back and if you put the ball in their court they will slip up more than you.

"In the first game Chelsea didn't work the ball into the final third quickly enough - lots of tentative square passing that was not suited to the playing surface. Brentford are not at the level they are by accident though they are not mugs, but it was sheer drive and adrenalin that was getting them to the first and second ball before our lads."

Today's FA Cup match is the first time that Chelsea and Brentford have met at Stamford Bridge in seven decades.
