Family grief after mother's operating table death

The family of a mother of three who died when trainee surgeons took out her ovary instead of her appendix have spoken of their revulsion at her treatment.

Maria de Jesus was five months pregnant when mistake after mistake at the Queen's Hospital in Romford led to her death. 8 doctors from there are currently under investigation by the GMC.Maria's family spoke to our reporter Glen Goodman.

Statement after surgeons remove wrong organ

The hospital trust involved has apologised after trainee surgeons accidentally removed a pregnant woman's ovary instead of her appendix in 2011. She died 19 days later.

"The Trust fully accepts the inquest verdict. I would once again like to apologise unreservedly to Mrs De Jesus' family for their loss.

"We have admitted liability in this case. The staff involved in Mrs De Jesus' care have been deeply affected by her death.

"An extensive Trust-wide action plan was drawn up following Mrs De Jesus' death in 2011 to ensure that such a tragic incident will not happen again.

"We have kept Mrs De Jesus' family fully informed about the investigation into her death and the subsequent wide-ranging work which has taken place to improve systems and patient safety."

A pregnant woman died weeks after two trainee surgeons accidentally removed her ovary instead of her appendix. Maria De Jesus was admitted to Queen’s Hospital in Romford on 31 October when she developed stomach pains.

An inquest heard that tests carried out on the tissue removed in the operation showed it was from one of her ovaries, not her appendix. It was only on November 9, that doctors realised the mistake. This was the day she miscarried.
