The M25 clockwise in Hertfordshire is closed between junctions 23 and 25 due to a "ridge" forming across the carriageway.
A diversion route is in place. Traffic approaching the closure at junction 23 are being asked to follow the black triangle diversion symbol via the A1, the A406 and the A10, to then re-join the M25 at J25.
There are long delays on the M25 after junction 23 had to be closed due to a "ridge" forming across the clockwise carriageway.
A spokesperson for the Highways Agency said: "Engineers are at the scene working out why the road surface has become so uneven.
"A sort of ridge has formed across all three lanes of the road."
Police are advising motorists to use alternative routes and avoid the area.
It is unclear at this stage what caused the damage.
