The principal at Newham College has resigned after ITV News exposed a series of allegations regarding the college's reputation, a spokesperson has said.

In a statement, the spokesperson said: “Following a number of anonymous allegations put into the public domain, the Corporation board commissioned an independent investigation.

"In order to allow the Corporation board to focus on repairing the reputation of the College, Denise Brown has decided to stand down from her post and this has been agreed by the board. The Corporation board is very focused on the interests of its learners and stakeholders."

Homophobic rant 'wholly unacceptable' to Newham College

Following the online publication of a recording in which Mark Walcott expressed views wholly unacceptable to us, Newham College formally suspended Mr Walcott with effect from 25th November 2013.

Since that date Mr Walcott has not been allowed onto Newham College's premises; nor has he provided any services to the College. On 9th December the College formally terminated its relationship with Mr Walcott through his company Stratford MADA.

As previously stated, the views expressed by Mr Walcott in that recording do not represent the values of Newham College; the College wishes to restate that it deplores those views.

Newham College remains 'proud of reputation'

In light of recent events concerning an online recording expressing views which do not reflect the values of Newham College, and in the best interests of the College, the Board of Governors has agreed with the Principal, Denise Brown-Sackey, that she will take a leave of absence, pending an independent investigation into recent allegations.

Newham College's focus remains unwaveringly on its learners. We are proud of our reputation as a leading college and a fair employer, not least as the only FE College in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index top 100, and will continue to make this the focus of our work.
