Essex recovering from flash floods

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said properties were affected in Canvey Island and resources were stretched as crews were called to incidents in Southend, Harlow and Ongar as flooding from summer storms brought parts of the country to a halt yesterday.

Fire Service dealt with 500 flood incidents

Essex Fire Service said firefighters and control operators dealt with some 500 flood and weather related incidents and calls from around 3pm yesterday.

Of those more than 400 were from Canvey Island - the worst hit area in the county. Seven pumping appliances focused on the south east corner of the island where the flooding was most severe.

Homes and communities in south-east England were flooded after heavy downpours yesterday, with people stranded in vehicles, roads blocked by rising waters and properties damaged by lightning.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said hundreds of properties were affected in Canvey Island and resources were stretched as crews were called to incidents in Southend, Harlow and Ongar, compounded by striking union members.
