Assault happened just after midnight

A man died after being assaulted in Hertford in the early hours of this morning.

The incident happened just after midnight at the entrance to the Stone House bar in Bull Plain.

It is believed the victim, a man in his 50s from Edmonton, was struck to the face causing him to fall to the ground. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

We are investigating this man’s death thoroughly to establish exactly what happened and the cause of his tragic death, which we are treating as suspicious.

We are currently questioning a 26-year-old man from Buntingford, who has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody at this time.

The events yesterday evening were seen by a number of people who were in the bar at the time. We are speaking to a number of witnesses, although I would urge anyone who saw what happened and has not yet been in contact with my officers, to please contact us.

– Detective Chief Inspector Jerome Kent from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit
