Second man remanded in custody after court appearance

Two lorry drivers have been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged in connection with the death of a man found in a container at Tilbury Docks.

Stephen McLaughlin, 34, and Timothy Murphy, 33, are accused of conspiring to facilitate illegal entry into the UK.

The men, both from Londonderry, Northern Ireland, spoke only to confirm their names and personal details when they appeared during separate hearings at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in Essex.

They are charged with conspiring with each other and "with other persons unknown" to "clandestinely convey 35 Afghan nationals by sea in to an English port which facilitated the commission of a breach of immigration law".

They were each remanded in custody until a hearing at Basildon Crown Court on a date to be set during the week beginning 17th November.

A lorry driver has been remanded in custody after appearing in court in connection with the death of a man found in a container at Tilbury Docks. Timothy Murphy, 33, is charged alongside Stephen McLaughlin with conspiring to facilitate illegal entry into the UK. Both men are from Londonderry in Northern Ireland.

Murphy is charged with between 1st and 17th August having conspired with McLaughlin "and together with other persons unknown to do an act, namely clandestinely convey 35 Afghan nationals by sea in to an English port, which facilitated the commission of a breach of immigration law".

He was remanded in custody for a plea and case management hearing at Basildon Crown Court on a date to be set during the week beginning 17th November.

Stephen McLaughlin, 34, of Limavady, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, and Timothy Murphy, 33 of Elmgrove, Londonderry, are both charged with conspiring to facilitate illegal entry into the UK.

The men, who are both lorry drivers, are to appear in custody at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court today.
