There has been a worrying increase in the number of pilots being targted by laser attacks as they fly over the capital.
The Met Police have released images of a blinding flash caused by a blue laser beam shone directly at a pilot during the Olympic Games.
But new kit is allowing the police to fight back, as Ronke Phillips now reports.
Richard Brandon, who works on board the Met's helicopter, says lasers being shone into cockpits are "incredibly distracting". However, their helicopter does have new equipment to identify where the laser is coming from.
A Virgin flight was forced to turn round and perform an emergency landing earlier today. The flight from Gatwick to Orlando Florida had to return to the airport after a technical issue shortly after take off.
The plane is safely on the ground and the passengers are disembarking. All flights in and out of London Gatwick are currently suspended.
