Police appeal to find triathlete's stolen racing bike

A charity fundraiser who was planning to compete in a triathlon next month to raise money for a cancer charity may have to pull out after his bike was stolen. The £7,000 Trek Speed Concept 7.5 bike was taken from Highbridge Road in Barking on August 3rd. The owner Paul Nash was training to compete in an Iron Man race in Menorca on September 21st which involves a 112 mile bike ride. He is hoping to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

The bike has white handle bars with bright red tape on the handles. It also has specially-fitted Fulcrum Wheels and a black storage box on the back. Anyone with information is asked to call the Barking and Dagenham Motor Vehicle Crime Squad on 020 8217 7976 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 111 555.


Two charged over shopkeeper's death

Two Lithuanian men have been charged with the manslaughter of a father-of-two who was killed by a moving lorry after chasing robbers from his cash and carry store.

Vidmantas Gonskoves and Aurimas Diliunas will appear at RedbridgeMagistrates' Court tomorrow accused of manslaughter and robbery.


Gang of 10 men try to rob cash and carry in Barking

Police say up to 10 men entered the Glen & Co Cash and Carry in Barking yesterday morning.

Shammi Atwal and his wife - who are co-owners of the business - tried to stop them, causing the gang to flee.

Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock said: "This was a man trying to stop thieves robbing his business. He acted bravely in defence of his wife and managed to chase the robbers from his premises only for him to be pushed in front of a moving lorry.

"People in the community know who committed this appalling and cowardly crime and I would urge them to contact my officers."

Father dies after being pushed beneath lorry in robbery

A father-of-two has died after being pushed under a moving lorry as he chased a gang which tried to rob his cash and carry.

Shammi Atwal has been praised by police for confronting the gang members, who were armed with metal bars and a sledgehammer, and defending his wife.

Barking bypass closed after man falls from footbridge

Police are investigating after a man fell from a footbridge over the A13 Alfred's Way in Barking before being hit by a lorry.

The condition of the man, who is currently being treated at the scene, is not yet known.

The road has been closed westbound and motorist are being advised to avoid the area with delays of more than an hour being reported.

Police say they were called shortly before 0515 this morning, along with the London Ambulance Service, London's Air Ambulance and London Fire Brigade.
