Former Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio is the favourite to take over at Reading after Brian McDermott was sacked yesterday. The club's owner Anton Zingarevich made the decision following Saturday's defeat to Aston Villa which left them 19th in the Premier League table, four points from safety.
However, some Reading players praised their former manager - striker Noel Hunt tweeted: "Want to say thanks to Brian for everything he did for me especially. He's been a Great Manager, Man and Friend to me and will be missed!"
The Reading manager Brian McDermott has denied that the club is hoping to sign the former Italy striker Filippo Inzaghi. The 38-year-old left AC Milan at the end of the season after a successful career, including scoring twice in the 2007 Champions League Final.
He had been linked with a move to the Premier League new boys. However, McDermott said he had been offered the player by an Italian agent but had turned it down.
