Man in court over pensioner's murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of an elderly woman, police said.

Mohammed Abdul Qayoum, 35, is accused of murdering Aftaben Khanom,74, who was found stabbed to death at an address in St John's Wood on Saturday evening.

Police and paramedics were called to Brownen Court in Grove End Road at 9.45pm after reports that a woman had been stabbed.

A post-mortem found Ms Khanom died from multiple stab wounds.

A Met Police spokesman said Qayoum, 35, of Brownwen Court, Grove End Road, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court charged with her murder and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey tomorrow.

The Prince of Wales has been to a sports shop in St John's Wood today.

He was there in his role as president of Business in the Community, a charity which encourages companies to be more community-minded.

The main priority of the store is to get local young people who aren't in employment, education or training into permanent jobs and apprenticeships.
