A Nobel laureate whose comments about the "trouble with girls" involved in science sparked an outcry has resigned from University College London.

Sir Tim Hunt, who was awarded the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine in 2001, yesterday apologised for any offence caused by his remarks at the World Conference of Science Journalists in South Korea.

He is reported to have told the conference: "Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. Three things happen when they are in the lab: you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticise them they cry."
