Police contain student protesters in central London

Students occupy Senate House during loans protest

Around 70 students have occupied Senate House, the administrative centre of University of London, in protest over the governments plans to privatise the student loan book, the closure of University of London Union and in support of Higher Education workers fighting for improved pay.

Today's occupation follows a wave of protests in universities across the country in the last few days including Edinburgh, Birmingham, Sussex and Goldsmiths.

President of the University of London Union is arrested

The President of the University of London Union, Michael Chessum, has been arrested. He was detained after leaving a meeting with University of London management about the future the Union.

His arrest is reportedly in response to a demonstration organised by ULU yesterday by hundreds of students demanding the Union remain student-led:

The demonstration Michael helped organise in his role as ULU President was peaceful and part of a proud history of student dissent. The students protest didn't even leave the pavement for goodness sake!
