They've been described as 'the beating heart of the Olympics'. Without them the games simply would not have happened. In fact, our army of Olympic volunteers did such an incredible job that the Mayor's office is now stepping up plans to get them involved in other major events.
And this afternoon thousands of those volunteers packed into Trafalgar Square as Boris Johnson paid tribute to them with a special carol concert. Toby Sadler was there.
