New figures have revealed that half of children in London under ten cannot swim. The Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington has been teaching a group the front crawl at St Mary's pool the front crawl. She expressed her surprise over the number that hadn't learned.
She said: "It's just shocking that we live on an island and we have people not knowing how to swim. It shocks me that you can learn to walk and learn yet you don't to learn swim which is a life skill and something you will use for the rest of your life."
Over 50% the parents questioned didn't think learning to swim was an important life skill. The lack of coaching has resulted in one in ten children experiencing an accident in the water.
