5% of Heygate flats to be social housing

The Heygate Estate being demolished, ready for new flats

Southwark Council has been criticised for agreeing a deal which means less than 5% of flats in a massive new residential development will be available to rent as social housing.

The information about plans for the Heygate Estate was accidentally revealed on their website earlier this week.

Demolition of the estate in Elephant and Castle began in 2011. It's hoped buyers will start moving in from 2015. The council has said 25% of the flats will be affordable.
