A dip in European traffic meant Gatwick Airport handled slightly fewer passengers last month than in January 2012, it was announced today.

A total of just under 2.1 million passengers passed through the West Sussex airport in January 2013 - a 0.8% fall on the January 2012 total.

Gatwick was hit far less by the bad weather last month than Heathrow: where hundreds of flights had to be cancelled during the snowy conditions.

The Gatwick figures come just hours ahead of an appearance before the House of Commons Transport Committee by London Mayor Boris Johnson.
