'Fast Eddie' admits £1.2m theft

Eddie Maher, known as Fast Eddie, who spent almost 20 years as a fugitive in the US, today admitted at Southwark Crown Court the 1993 theft of a security van containing £1.2 million.

Fast Eddie put behind bars

After almost 20 years on the run, justice has caught up with the thief nicknamed "Fast Eddie".

Eddie Maher vanished in 1993 - along with the security van he was driving - and the £1.2 million inside.

Today, Maher, who's from South Woodham Ferrers in Essex, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to theft.

Detective Inspector David Giles from Suffolk Police says it was a meticulously-planned crime.
