Sharp rise in number of renters and their costs

New figures suggest a quarter of Londoners are renting their homes- up from just 18% two years ago.

It's thought the rise is due to climbing property prices preventing would-be first-time buyers from becoming homeowners.

New research by Centre for London shows rental costs now take up over a quarter of household income. But as those costs go up, standards remain poor. Complaints against landlords and letting agents are on the rise and a half of rented homes fail to meet basic standards of health and safety.
