Lack of council spending on sport threatens lives

A new report suggests that there is a link between councils failing to promote physical inactivity and premature deaths among residents.

Newham among most inactive boroughs in capital

Lack of spending by councils to encourage residents to take up physical exercise can lead to premature deaths, according to a new report.

Research indicates that there is a link between premature death rates in boroughs and a lack of investment from councils in promoting physical activity.

Barking and Dagenham was the most inactive borough, followed by Newham, home of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Greenwich.

Richmond upon Thames, Islington and Kensington and Chelsea were the boroughs with the lowest number of inactive residents, with just 20% of adults in those boroughs deemed to be inactive.
