From midnight, same sex couples in England and Wales are able to take part in full marriage ceremonies and enjoy the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.

From midnight tonight same sex couple across England and Wales can enjoy full marriage ceremonies and the same rights as heterosexual couples.

The govenment's legislation came into force last July and couple's were able to register their intention to marry under the act on March 13.

A number of couple's are bidding to become the first ever to be married in Britain by trying to time it so their vows are said just seconds after midnight.
