A 92-year-old war veteran has had 11 war and service medals stolen from his Whetstone home on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

A man claiming to be from a water company knocked on the veteran's door on Friday and said he needed to check the water pressure. He appeared to look at the taps in the kitchen before leaving a short time later.

That night the veteran noticed that items in his bedroom had been moved and his medals had been taken.

Police are looking for a white man, 5ft 10inches tall and of stocky build with an Irish accent. He was wearing grey clothing.

The victim served in the Grenadier Guards during the Second World War, serving mainly in Italy and North Africa.
