A 30-year-old Sergeant attached to Hackney Borough was found guilty of two counts of common assault yesterday.

PS Charles Pilbeam who is currently suspended, assaulted a 27-year-old man by twisting his ear and standing on his foot on 2 March 2013.

The man had just been searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Afterwards Pilbeam asked him to pick up some paper he had discarded. However, the man declined then the assault took place.

One of the officers on duty at the time reported the assault to the MPS Directorate of Professionals Standards (DPS). The incident was investigated and the officer was summonsed for the offence in November 2013.

PS Pilbeam will be sentenced on 7 August at St Albans Crown Court
