The Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has said the club agreed to sell the England striker Danny Welbeck to Arsenal because he did not have the goalscoring record of other strikers at the club.

Welbeck joined the Gunners right at the end of the transfer window after United brought in Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. He scored ten times for United last season.

"With Danny Welbeck, yes, he was here from when he was nine. After coming back from Sunderland he has played three seasons for Manchester United. But he doesn't have the record of Van Persie or Rooney, and that is the standard."

Welbeck could get his first game in an Arsenal shirt against Manchester City on Saturday.
