Drivers could be fined for leaving car running

Councils could fine drivers from today

From today, motorists in the boroughs of Westminster and Islington who leave their engines idling could be fined. Traffic marshals will be able to hand out £20 fines to drivers who leave the engine running while stuck in traffic.

The policy aims to cut air pollution, which London Mayor Boris Johnson claims is linked to the deaths of thousands of Londoners each year. Traffic marshals will firstly ask drivers to switch their engines off, with fines issued as a last resort.
