In an era when women had few chances to shine, two feats stood out as major milestones. One-hundred years ago this weekend the gloriously-named Raymonde de Laroche became the first woman to be awarded a pilot's certificate.

In the same year another woman, Harriet Quimby, flew across the English Channel and on Saturday 10th March an airfield in Kent pays tribute to Raymonde, Harriet and other heroines of the sky as part of a worldwide celebration to mark a century of female flight. Derek Johnson has more.
