A driver who crashed into the back of a moving motorcycle, sending it careering nearly 100 metres along a busy road, has been jailed for ten months.

Hove Crown Court heard that Robert Gunn, 35, of Senlac Green in Uckfield, was seen driving aggressively on the London Road between Maresfield and Uckfield in the early evening of November 4, last year.

He was overtaking dangerously in his Vauxhall Vectra and as he drove towards the town centre a few minutes after 7pm when he ran into the back of a Kawasaki ZZR motorcycle ridden by a 20-year-old man from Crowborough.

Witnesses said he didn't even slow down after the impact, even though the damage to his car would have made it obvious that the collision was significant. The car was later found outside his home but, although police were able to contact him by phone, he refused to hand himself in until the following morning.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving yesterday and was jailed for ten months - and was disqualified from driving for three years. He will also have to take an extended retest to regain his licence.

PC Dave Catt from East Sussex Road Policing Unit said: "Thankfully, the young motorcyclist is recovering from his injuries, which included a fractured spine. He was riding to work, within the speed limit and is a totally innocent victim of Gunn's appalling driving.

"We believe that another vehicle, a grey Vauxhall Astra van, may also have been involved during events leading up to the collision and we would still like to talk to the driver of that vehicle. Anyone with information can give us a call on 101 and quote serial 1434 of 04/11."
