M20 barrier scrapped

Barrier removed to save money Photo: Highways Agency

A special barrier used to manage traffic on the M20 is being removed to save taxpayers' money. The quick-change-moveable barrier's only been used twice since 2008 and costs more than £600,000 a year. The Highways Agency put it in to try to help tackle disruption at the Channel ports or Eurotunnel.

"Ahead of the renewal of the lease, we have considered all the options, and decided that it is in taxpayers' best interests for the QMB to be removed."

"We wish to reassure communities in Kent that we will continue to work with our partners, including Kent Police and Kent County Council, to find a long term solution to mitigate the effects of Operation Stack. Any solution must of course offer good value for taxpayers' money."Work to remove the QMB will take place in the Spring."
