A man found in a burning car in Chilworth is believed to have been dead before the fire started. Police are now treating it as murder. Officers were called to Chilworth Drove by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service at 1.30am on Tuesday, after firefighters who had been tackling the blaze realised there was a body in the vehicle. Post mortem results show the body is that of a young adult male, although he hasn't yet been identified and the cause of death is still unclear.
Officers are asking for help from the public and would like any information from witnesses to the fire, or anyone who saw the car - a silver two-door Mercedes C200 CDI, driving in or around Southampton late on Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Anyone with information should call 101 or the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
