The first ever 'European International Submarine Races' take place today off Gosport. Scuba divers from across the world will be using their own custom built mini-subs.
Teams from Canada, France, Oman, UK, and USA will all have designed and built their own submarines and will then race them flooded, piloted and pedalled by a scuba diver, with the teams constantly modifying their craft to perfect their performance.
Typically the submarines range in length from three metres to four metres and travel at speeds of up to seven knots.
The races will test the engineering expertise and stamina of enterprising university students from three continents.
