Hampshire's Iain Percy and Dorset's Andrew Simpson were forced to settle for silver after a dramatic finish to the Star Men's Keelboat race in Weymouth. The Beijing Gold Medallists were leading the fleet going into today's race and needed to finish in the top 4 today to guarantee a gold medal. However for most of the race the British duo were down in 5th chasing their main opponents the Swedish team of Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen.
The British crew were in the medal battle with Sweden and Brazil, and for most of the race it looked like they might make the top spot. But in the final 300 metres of the race, the team slipped to 8th as the Swedes climbed up from 2nd to win the race.
Afterwards both sailors paid tribute to the thousands of people who have packed the beaches at Weymouth, saying that the crowds really spurred them on.
Hampshire's Ben Ainslie will hope to go one better this afternoon when he defends his Olympic title in the Finn class.
