After months of waiting there were tears of joy and disappointment across the region today as thousands of youngsters found out their A level exam results.

For the first time in two decades the number of students gaining the top two A-Level grades has fallen. And the battle of the sexes also took a twist with boys outperforming girls for the highest A star grades.

But the subject most teenagers were talking about today was university places - with this year's intake the first to face fees of up to £9,000.

So did they get the grades they needed or will they be paying those fees for a course that wasn't their first choice? Christine Alsford has been finding out.
