Just days before thousands of drivers face a massive rise in toll charges at the Dartford Crossing, Meridian can reveal private companies are being offered over half a billion pounds to install new technology to collect the money.
From Sunday, car drivers will see charges rise from £1.50 to £2 and to £2.50 in two years time. For lorries the fee goes up from £3.70 to £5 and then to £6 in 2014.
But it's the cost of the contract to operate and run the scheme that's causing most anger. Our transport correspondent Mike Pearse has this exclusive report.
