Thames Valley Police have launched separate enquiries after two pedestrians were fatally injured within an hour of each other in central Reading.
Officers were called to Great Knolly's Street at 11.45pm on Friday night following reports a man had been hit by a bus.
It was later confirmed a 51 year old local man had died. His family have been informed.
The driver of the bus stopped at the scene and was not injured. No passengers were on the bus at the time of the incident.
Less than an hour later, just before 12.45am on Saturday, police received reports that a woman had been struck by a white Range Rover on the slip road of the Inner Distribution Road between the Castle Street and Oxford Road roundabouts.
Officers and ambulance crews attended however the pedestrian, a 44-year-old woman, died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.
Road closures were in place in the area while an investigation was launched. The roads were subsequently re-opened.
A 30-year-old man from Reading was arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care while over specified limit of a controlled drug. He was released under investigation.
Officers are appealing for witnesses.
