The lead singer of Southampton band Delays, who has been undergoing cancer treatment, has switched on the Christmas lights in his home city.

Greg Gilbert, 39, said he was 'humbled and so grateful' to be chosen.

Fans and fellow musicians rallied to help the father-of-two when he was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in 2016.

More than £200,000 has been raised for treatment not available to him on the NHS.

His fiancee Stacey Heale set up a GoFundMe page in December last year which raised an astonishing £100,000 in just 48 hours.

The singer is also a talented artist and recently spoke to Meridian about how his drawing has helped his recovery.

Mr Gilbert was chosen to switch on the lights after being nominated by Daily Echo readers and then selected by a Go!Southampton Business Improvement District panel.

Humbled to have been asked to turn on Southampton's Xmas lights this Saturday - surreal, feeling immense imposter syndrome but also grateful.
