In a statement the club said they were 'delighted' to secure a deal with Clement.

Clement's footballing career has seen him win the Premier League, lift the FA Cup twice and the Community Shield during an assistant managerial spell at Stamford Bridge.

His career has also spanned across Europe, with stints at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“Not only has he coached at some of the greatest clubs in Europe, winning trophies, league titles and European honours and working with some of the greatest players in the world, fundamentally he also has a rich understanding of English football having managed in both the Championship and the Premier League in recent years.

Now, everyone at Reading Football Club is fully behind Paul and his squad of players as, together, we initially set our sights on an eight-game battle and continue to strive to the take this club forward.”

– Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay

He replaces former Manchester United and Holland defender Stam Jaap, who was sacked by the club earlier in the week.

Reading are currently 20th in the table, only three points above the relegation zone with eight matches remaining, having won just one of their last 18 league matches.
