Late night swimmers rescued under Brighton Pier

Two people have been rescued from the sea after they were stuck under Brighton Pier.

The pair got into trouble after going for a swim on Tuesday night.

Coastguards found them clinging to the underneath of the pier.

The rescue by Brighton Lifeboat was made difficult with shallow water, breaking waves and a strong tide.

It took two attempts for rescuers to get both swimmers out of the water.

Both were treated by paramedics. One of them was treated on the scene and the other was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Brighton welcomes thousands of visitors to the coast at this time of year and we’re always pleased to see them enjoy the beaches. We’d always advise against entering the water if you’ve been drinking alcohol as this can impair your decision making and particularly if you’re unfamiliar with the tides and conditions, things can go wrong very quickly."
