A French yachtsman who was badly injured in a choppy and rain-swept Solent has been rescued by the Cowes RNLI lifeboat.
The alarm was raised by the French crew of the 38-foot Canberra Star. A member of their crew had injured his back when the boat was in the Osborne Bay area.
The man was found wedged in the cockpit. Lifeboat crews then had to begin the time-consuming process of trying to extract the injured yachtsman, who had fallen in the galley and was going in and out of consciousness.
The man, thought to be in his early 40s, was eventually lifted on to a stretcher-board. He was then taken to to St Mary’s Hospital.
