A 12-year-old girl died today after being struck by a ball at a school in Basildon, Essex, the East of England Ambulance Service said.

12 year old Leonie Nice fell and suffered a fit when she was struck by the ball at midday on Tuesday 13th March, at school in Basildon, Essex. She died soon after at Basildon Hospital.

A 12-year-old girl has died after being hit by a rugby ball during a PE lesson. Leonie Nice was catching the ball during a lesson at Woodlands School in Takely End, Basildon, Essex, when she was hit in the chest. Andy White, headteacher, said Leonie was a 'delightful and kind girl'.

A statement from Woodlands School in Basildon said: "Leonie Nice, a year 7 pupil, was catching a rugby ball in a PE lesson when she was hit in the chest by the ball. Leonie keeled over and appeared to go into a fit. Our trained first-aiders gave CPR at the scene and the ambulance arrived quickly"
