Uni's energy-saving 'blackout'

All non-essential electrical equipment at the University of Southampton will be switched off tonight.

'Blackout' to save energy

Over 250 students and staff at the University of Southampton's Highfield campus will spend this evening tracking down and turning off electrical items, such as PCs, printers, lights and mobile phone chargers – which aren’t needed on a Saturday or Sunday.

The University is committed to a 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 and this challenge is a way of highlighting what we can achieve simply by flicking the off-switch on items which don’t need to be left on.”
